about
Finally releasing this sweet old tune.
Written in Oviedo, Spain, probably 2013, on a long, lost summer of wandering about in the summer swelter. I rented a room in a 'pension' for two nights of solitude after weeks of hostels, lay down in the afternoon, on clean white sheets, in a small, clean white room with a window into a tiny interior patio, and it began to rain.
Later that same journey I remember singing it on the deck of a boat from Italy to Greece, feeling the swell of the ocean in the waves in the cold, dark night, this song rocked me over the water.
Recorded in dear Mikey's bedroom with a duvet on the door for soundproofing and his two white rats, Pancho and Sanchez, sitting in the sleeves of my cardigan, over endless cups of tea and home-cooked meals in Acton, London, 2015.
There is a beautiful music video made by Isher Sahota and featuring James John Jolly's painting on youtube from 2015 also. You can find it here: urlis.net/ewg1e7x
Thunder won’t you roll
Thunder won’t you roll
Over under my bones
While the stones of sound
Come crashing down
And fall away
Like ocean waves
And I’m only a lonely beach
In a lonely bay
And you can wash me clean
You can wash me clean
But you can’t wash me clean away
I’m not driftwood and you can’t whittle me
Any shape you like
I’m not driftwood and you can’t whittle me
Any shape you like
I’m not driftwood but oh the weather it
Takes its toll sometimes
Thunder won’t you roll
Thunder won’t you roll
Over, under, inside my bones
While the tarnished silver sound
Of rain meeting the ground
Falls though the open window
And the air presses down
Heavy as hands
Thunder won’t you roll
Thunder won’t you roll
Thunder won’t you roll
Thunder won’t you roll
Thunder won’t you roll
Thunder won’t you roll
Thunder won’t you hold me so I can let me go
I’m just driftwood and you can whittle me
Any shape you like
I’m just driftwood and you can whittle me
Any shape you like
A London born, Barcelona based, singer songwriter with a focus on poetry, a love of the melodic leaps of Joni Mitchell and
the intimate, confessional words of Leonard Cohen. Leaning into the scratch of homemade recordings, the low-down blues of Karen Dalton, the easy darkness of Gillian Welch, the swing of Billie Holiday's ballads and the soft edges of sleepy Delta Blues....more
